Competing frames

One visit. Three live stories competing to define it.

Each frame is anchored by different creators, lives on different networks, and carries a different sentiment signature.

Frame · 01 Historic Diplomacy

First state visit in nine years.

~55% of mainstream news framing

Trajectory: dominant. Bloomberg, BBC, CBS, Fox News. Brass-band welcome, 17-CEO entourage, market stabilization.

"Trump is greeted by a formal state welcome and massive fanfare in Beijing." (Fox News, 525K eng)

Frame · 02 Iran War Distraction

Timing as deflection.

~20% of Trump-topic critical theme weight

Trajectory: persistent. atrupar, meidastouch, critical-left commentary. Iran-war contradictions, inflation backlash.

"Iran War Mismanagement and Market Volatility" is the largest critical cluster on Trump.

Frame · 03 Beijing Charm Offensive

The international layer.

240M TikTok engagements on China alone

Trajectory: rising. Al Jazeera, BBC TikTok, ChannelNewsAsia, biao.china.1. A frame US monitoring rarely sees in real time.

"Beijing residents are divided. Some hope better trade policies, others believe Trump is untrustworthy." (Al Jazeera)

07 / 10 · Three frames
A fourth frame, quieter, with steeper velocity

MAGA posts peaked May 10 and are receding. The base is talking past the visit.

PEAK · May 9 May 7 May 12 May 13

MAGA posts spiked 152% week-over-week, peaked May 9-10 (90,080 posts), and are now declining as the visit lands. The conversation is dominated not by the China summit but by the Massie hush-money story (catturd2 76K engagements), Trump Mobile scam accusations, and James Comey's anti-Trump commentary (kaitlancollins 621K engagements). Net sentiment 55 (lower than Trump's 66).

The reading. A foreign-policy showcase typically rallies the base around the principal. The MAGA topic is moving the other direction at the exact moment of the visit. Watch whether the China imagery overrides internal dissent inside 72 hours, or whether the visit lands as a centrist-coded story with no base celebration tail.

What we are watching now.

  • Taiwan secondary spike. Already broke all-time mentions and creators today. A second spike within 48h signals a frame collision (visit-as-diplomacy versus visit-as-Asia-realignment).
  • Beijing sentiment recovery. Today's 37 is the lower bound for the seven-day trail. If it stays below 50 through May 15, the city becomes the negative-frame anchor regardless of summit outcome.
  • Reddit re-entry. Reddit ran at 0.5% of the universe today. Above 5% inside 72h is the organized skeptic backlash arriving. Absence = visit landed too cleanly to attack on timing.
  • MAGA velocity reconvergence. Posts peaked May 10, receding. If MAGA topic does not reorient toward the visit by May 15, the base read is fractured.
  • Beijing residents-divided frame. Al Jazeera and biao.china.1 are seeding inside-China public reaction. If US TikTok picks it up, the frame moves from international to domestic. Political read shifts overnight.
  • CEO-entourage deals. Cook, Musk, Huang. Watch Nvidia, Apple, Tesla topics for inflection on day-two announcements.
Methodology

24-hour window, May 12-13 2026 UTC, with 7-day time-series May 7-13. Engagement, mention, creator, sentiment, and theme weights pulled from eight LunarCrush topic entities (Donald Trump, China, Beijing, Taiwan, Xi, MAGA, Tariffs, Trade War) across X, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, and 10,000+ news outlets. Theme weights extracted via NLP. Charts are inline SVG built from LunarCrush time-series, no external data. The heatmap normalizes each topic row to that topic's total engagements, so cells show network mix, not absolute volume.

The Beijing sentiment crash (71-week-avg to 37) reflects NLP-detected language tone on Beijing-tagged posts, not a public-opinion poll. Critical-language cluster includes "high-stakes," "deep tensions," "choreographed," "untrustworthy" inside news-aggregator coverage. The Xi-topic 1.89B all-time-high on May 10 is independently verified in the LC time-series API.
